EPILOGUE

“ARE YOU DONE hugging the goats?” Olivia entered Sonny’s goat barn and came to stand near Rhett.

He held a small brown baby goat. “I needed a moment to chase away my trepidation. Isn’t that what you say every time I take you on a new adventure?”

“It is.” Olivia smiled and sat down next to him on the bench. She took the baby goat from his arms and set it in the pen with its mama. And then she took Rhett’s hands. “When I was racing, I’d never have guessed this was where I’d end up.”

“That we’d be living on a ranch in Minnesota on the Mississippi River?” He was teasing, of course.

She played along. “That I’d be helping you run a multi-experience adventure tour company?” They’d been in Minnesota for two years and had built a few beginner mountain biking trails on their ranch. They planned to break ground on a zipline experience next spring.

“And that you’d be helping Sonny run a goat farm and emotional retreat?” Rhett squeezed her hands tight. “Not to mention how we’ve partnered with Tad and Sharon to run the hang-gliding business.”

“And the water jetpack experience. We’re busy,” she agreed, since he needed to hear it said out loud. “But we’ve hired some good people.”

Nancy from her former racing team and her teenage son, Van. They lived in town several miles down the road.

“We need to hire a few more. That sailboat you bought...” His hold on her hands was becoming tighter, giving away his stress.

“It’s in need of refurbishing, but I’m not averse to putting in some elbow grease.”

The baby goat bleated, walking back toward them on unsteady feet. It was darling. Sonny had been right about the goats relieving stress and bringing people joy.

The alarm on her phone went off.

“It’s time to start dinner.” Olivia had insisted Sonny teach her how to cook, but the only way she got food on the table when it was her night to make dinner was if she set reminders for herself.

Sonny had a small room inside the bunkhouse they’d built to house his retreat clients, who came to get away from it all and recenter themselves. Sonny was good at that. He was also thriving with Rhett and Olivia in Minnesota. They ate together almost every night. They were their own little family unit and considered Tad’s family an extension of their own.

Olivia drew Rhett to his feet. He still took long rides on his big horse, weather permitting, although they didn’t gallop as if the devil was on their heels. And he still enjoyed prodding Olivia when she took herself too seriously and grew bossy.

But today was different.

“I love you, but I scared you,” she told Rhett. “You need a hug.”

Rhett scoffed, but his dark eyes betrayed the truth.

Olivia enfolded her husband into her arms and began to count to thirty. When she was done, she drew back to look at her strong, hardworking cowboy. The man who’d stolen her heart and took time to get used to the idea of change, big or small.
